According to feng shui concepts, every house spends a certain amount of space (either big or small) as the place to receive visitors. That’s the main purpose of the living room. Besides, it could be used as the place for family activities such as meeting, drinking tea, relaxing, watching TV, listening to music, etc..
Because it’s the center of exchanging yin-yang, interior-exterior, emotions, work and fortune between the householder and guests, the living room relates closely to the householder’s career and wealth. Feng shui in the living room could partly reflect the condition in terms of career, health, fortune and happiness of its householder.
Do’s in the living room
The householder sits at good position facing good direction, guests sit at bad position facing good direction.
The householder had better sit at the single chair and invite guests to the long chair.
To maintain the owner’s authority and show respect to guests at the same time, the householder should stand to the East to receive guests, while guests should stand to the West. It’s the best if both could turn their faces to the South (common rules from ancient time). If the conditions do not allow, it’s alright for the householder to stand to the left while guests stand to the right. When shaking hands, the householder only need to hold out his hand, then the guest turn 90 degree to the left and shake the householder’s hand. The layout of the living room ought to be arranged based on that for convenience.
It does not bring any good even if the furniture is big-sized and expensive. When choosing furniture, the householder should pay more attention to the material, color, shape and its size compared to the living room.
In terms of size, if the furniture is too big or too small compared to the living room, the householder will have to suffer from bad luck.
In terms of shape, circle, square or polygons are all good.
The householder should prioritize furniture with material and color helping his element of birth year. In contrast, furniture with material and color hindering his element had better be avoided.

The householder should hang paintings of 8 galloping horses, landscape, rose, lotus, chrysanthemum, lake, financial god, meaningful chinese letters, etc.
Use shade tolerant and benign plants. Trees in the living room have to meet these standards: moldy bark, big trunk, strong root system, small top, free or few lumps and neat branches.
Don’ts in the living room
Avoid using a living room with deformed, distorted shapes or too many angles. Feng shui master can cure this by putting feng shui objects such as crystal ball, quartz tower, etc in bad positions.
The living room should not face the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen.
The owner’s seat is not advised to be placed with its back to the door.
It is also inadvisable to hang private pictures of family members in the living room.
If the living room is low and not well-lit, it’s not good for the householder.
Fireplace, air condition, aquarium, miniatures, loudspeakers and mirrors should only be placed in bad positions to send away bad luck. In case the owner puts them in good positions, not only do they backfire but they also bring in more bad luck.
When hanging the mirror, it's neccesary to make sure nothing bad reflected in the mirror such as the bathroom, kitchen, bed, weird figures, etc.
Avoid using plants with these characteristics: vines, small trunk, top and trunk being equal in size, rough and thorny. (Round cactuses can be used to placed to bad positions to clear negative energy.
If the householder is doing great business or currently in positions of high power, he should not hang the head of buffulo/bull, stuffed ferocious animals, boats on rough water, fields and gardens, sunset, twilight and deformed objects.
